The Limited Information Cyclone Reconstruction and Integration for Climate and Economics (LICRICE) model [current version 2.0] is a model that I have developed to understand the planetary distribution and impact of tropical cyclones ("tropical cyclones" includes hurricanes, tropical storms, typhoons and cyclones). The model reconstructs the wind exposure of points on the surface during historical tropical cyclones. The model uses a combination of statistical and analytical techniques to reconstruct the winds of historical storms using only the "Limited Information" retained in standard meteorological observations. This video illustrates the reconstruction process for Hurricane Ivan (2004)LICRICE is currently being used to understand how variations in the global climate affect the distribution and intensity of tropical cyclones. The video below shows estimated exposure levels at different points on the surface for each year between 1950-2008. Another application of LICRICE is to understand the impact of cyclones on populations. The reconstruction procedure can be implemented at arbitrary resolution, so it is currently being used to study the impact of cyclones on households, regions, countries and the global economy.
Finally, LICRICE can be applied for risk assessment and the design of insurance/re-insurance strategies. By combining the climatological and economic insights from the studies mentioned above, my colleagues and I are working on methods for diversifying the risks from these low-probability and high-cost events.
